How to Overhaul the Wear of Marine Cylinder Liners

Overview of Cylinder Liner Function and Wear Characteristics

Cylinder liners are critical and wear-prone spare parts in diesel engines. The inner surface of the upper section of the cylinder liner forms an integral part of the combustion chamber, directly exposed to high temperature, high pressure, and corrosive gases.

During operation, the piston assembly moves reciprocally inside the cylinder liner, subjecting it to side thrust and intense friction. Meanwhile, the outer surface of the liner forms a cooling water jacket with the cylinder block, making it vulnerable to cavitation and electrochemical corrosion.

Dimensional Accuracy and Wear Limits

A new cylinder liner is manufactured with precise dimensional accuracy, geometric shape, and surface roughness. Typical machining tolerances include:

Roundness and cylindricity error: 0.0125–0.045 mm

Surface roughness: Ra 0.4–1.6 μm

After installation into the engine block, these errors may increase. The roundness and cylindricity errors should be controlled within 0.05 mm.

During engine operation, uneven wear occurs due to piston movement, resulting in reduced wall thickness and increased geometric errors. When wear exceeds approximately 0.4%–0.8% of the cylinder diameter (D), sealing performance of the combustion chamber deteriorates.

Excessive wear reduces engine power, degrades performance, and may lead to damage of other components.

Importance of Monitoring Cylinder Liner Wear

Cylinder liner wear should be monitored according to manufacturer guidelines and engine operating conditions. Proper monitoring helps prevent excessive wear and ensures reliable engine performance.

1. Measurement of Cylinder Liner Inner Surface Wear

Wear measurement is typically performed using precision instruments such as inside micrometers, dial bore gauges, or specialized cylinder measuring tools.

Measurements focus on cylinder diameter, roundness error, cylindricity error, and inner diameter increase. These values are compared with manufacturer specifications or industry standards to determine whether the liner can continue to be used.

During measurement:

Accurately record data at multiple measurement points.

Calculate roundness for each cross-section and determine the maximum value.

Measure inner diameter increase and compare it with previous measurements.

Determine measurement intervals to calculate wear rate over time.

The final assessment is based on the maximum roundness, cylindricity, or diameter increase compared to allowable limits.

2. Maintenance and Repair of Cylinder Liner Wear

If wear remains within allowable limits and only minor surface defects such as scratches or scoring are present, repair can be carried out by maintenance personnel.

The most common repair method is boring. This process removes surface damage and corrects geometric errors such as excessive roundness or cylindricity deviations.

During boring:

Surface defects like scoring, scratches, and wear ridges are eliminated.

Geometric accuracy is restored.

The final inner diameter must still meet specified standards.

For cases where inner diameter increase exceeds the standard, boring can still be performed if the cylinder liner wall thickness and strength remain sufficient. After machining, a new piston assembly is installed to restore proper clearance between the piston and liner.

Post-Repair Requirements

After repair, the engine must undergo a proper running-in (break-in) process before returning to normal operation. This should follow manufacturer guidelines or be adjusted based on the repair condition.

Replacement Intervals and Product Selection

The typical replacement interval for original and OEM cylinder liners in medium-speed engines is around 20,000 operating hours. High-quality professional products generally last between 12,000 and 16,000 hours, while low-quality or counterfeit products may only last around 6,000 hours.
